Mark Twain aptly stated, “The time to begin writing is when you have finished it to your satisfaction. By that time you begin to clearly and logically perceive what it is that you really want to say.” To prepare to reach this moment of clarity takes planning, laying out all of your thoughts and ideas, then distilling them down to allow for what it is that you really do want to say. Recently, I had the opportunity to try a “novel” approach to learning this process by taking “The Online Creative Classroom for Memoir Writing”, available 24/7/365. It provides valuable instruction on just how to go about reaching your writing goals by providing easy writing principals, along with numerous examples of writers’ stories to illuminate these ideas. Jeff Resnick, accomplished author and storyteller, provides this online classroom, along with support and encouragement, to help writers find a way to “pen” their stories without the deadline pressure to finish within an arbitrary timeline. If you are interested as a “boomer/senior,” as I was, or you are of any age, I would highly recommend this approach to creating a “lasting legacy” for you, your family and friends. “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.”

In a world where people's lives are continually being reduced to numbers, Jeff Resnick’s Online Creative Classroom for Memoir Writing is about finding one's bliss and following it through the labyrinth of academic disdain for human complexity, and finding that not all business models are based entirely upon the single bottom line of financial profit. You will be reminded of the interconnectedness of life and lives. How, despite the American emphasis on the myth of individualism, we do not exist in a vacuum. Rather, we are influenced by family and friends, society and its organizations, and by our loves and loss in helping us find our way to address the elemental questions of what it means to experience life. If you ever had the good fortune to experience a TEACHER, then you know how life enhancing that can be. And, you recognize how rare an opportunity that is. You see, there is a difference between a teacher and a TEACHER. Defining the difference is sort of like describing Jazz. As Louis Armstrong said: “Man, if you gotta ask you'll never know.” An authentic TEACHER nurtures new growth like a concerned gardener, requiring more than just mastery of some skill set, and in this day and age it has virtually become missionary work. Even more so if the TEACHER is inclined towards authentic humanistic ideals and questions the priorities of the academy by suggesting that “The Emperor Has No Clothes.” To be taught by a TEACHER who treats you as someone with equal value, who speaks to you as a person to a person, who may have a head start down the road but doesn't tell you what the destination should be, someone who encourages the explored life versus the pre-packaged, is a gift I have been blessed to experience. “Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself. Take your time and enjoy your walk through the door.

Jeff: What a treasure you have gifted me. Thank you so much for your beautiful narration and your support in my amateur but sincere writing. You also have given me the courage to continue blabbering on. I hope whatever plans you have over the next few months are filled with many happy moments and lots of wonderful music. Stay well and hope to see you mentoring more budding writers soon.

Hey Jeff: You The Man! I was excited to have the opportunity to test drive your online classroom. Frankly, I didn’t know what to expect! Once I logged in and began the process of going back to school after 50+ years, I was absolutely amazed by the ease of learning the art of memoir writing from a gifted professional . . . you . . . via the online lessons. Every lesson is not only well researched and professionally produced, but comprehensive in subject matter. I particularly appreciated the ability to revisit any and all lessons as often as I wished to refresh my memory, which isn’t as great as it used to be! Most impressive, though, was your honest and philosophical manner of presenting your subject matter. I don’t know how much the tuition will be when you release this program to the public, but your online classroom is more than worth its weight in gold.
