I had the pleasure of teaching “Life Stories Are Vivid Memories Meant To Be Shared” at the Lifelong Learning Institute in Midlothian, Virginia, in the Fall of 2018. For me, this was a long overdue return to the classroom. My first teaching position fresh out of college in 1971 confirmed my natural instinct that Teaching, Learning, and Sharing are one and the same. One can’t succeed without the other two. All these years later, my goal at LLI was to share my storytelling adventure with students hungry to learn a meaningful skill so coveted in our shared Age of Seniority! My introductory class was a revelation, but certainly not a surprise.
“What are you hoping to gain from this class?” I asked.
“I want my grandchildren to know our family history to better understand who they are,” was their universal answer.
I devoted that first class to sharing two of my own stories. In doing so, the very purpose of this new storytelling adventure crystalized in my mind. “Together,” I told them, “I would love to help you craft and share your stories with your family, and the global community, if you so desire.”
As always, I learned as much from my students as they learned from me. We shed some tears during the weeks that followed. And shared just as many chuckles. Most important, though, I learned that age is by no means a barrier to creativity. On the contrary, age fosters the innermost need to create. On the following pages, you can decide if my Teaching-Learning-Sharing natural instinct delivered the results we all hoped for. Yes, some spectacular and moving original stories will mesmerize you from beginning to end, guaranteed!
Are you ready to begin your storytelling adventure? Remember, we’re never too old to Teach, Learn, and Share.
